Sales in social media, orders in messages
Rakovar is a local business in Kharkiv that delivers live and boiled crayfish. Before the site, sales went through social media: the range and prices in posts, orders in messages or by phone. For an online store this is an unusual product. A buyer does not pick “crayfish in general” but a size, from small to “monsters+”, live or boiled, and wants to know at once what “medium” means: how much one weighs and how many there are in a kilo. Delivery is across the city at taxi rates, not by post. The task: a convenient checkout and a good presentation of the product.
A hard deadline. Crayfish are sold seasonally, and the site had to be live by the start of the season.
A standard store is built for postal delivery. The WooCommerce checkout out of the box is 12 fields: last name, company, country, region, postcode, two address lines and a separate “Ship to a different address” block. For delivery within Kharkiv most of them are useless, and every extra field is a reason to abandon the order.
A catalogue with sizes. 12 items: six sizes of live and six of boiled crayfish at different prices. The size names say nothing on their own; the weight and the count per kilo are what matters.
The terms change. Prices, the delivery cost, opening hours and phone numbers are things the owner has to change himself, without a developer.
What we did
A custom theme on WordPress and WooCommerce, in which the catalogue, the cart and the checkout are written for one store and one city.
A custom theme on WordPress and WooCommerce
We took the markup of a licensed HTML template and moved it into a custom theme based on Underscores: the WooCommerce templates, the cart, the checkout and the page blocks were written for this store. The phone, email, address, opening hours, delivery cost and delivery text, the footer line — all are separate fields in the admin, and the site puts them into the header, the footer and the cart itself.
The catalogue and the cart on one screen
Two categories, “Live” and “Boiled”, with six sizes in each. A card shows the size, the weight of one crayfish and the count per kilo, for example “20–30 g (40–45 pcs per kg)”. Products carry attributes: weight, count per kilo, nutritional and energy value, storage conditions and shelf life. Next to the list sits the cart with the delivery terms, so the buyer sees the total and the terms while choosing. The cart in the header updates without reloading the page.
Checkout: 4 fields instead of 12
We kept the name, the phone (required), the email (optional) and one “Delivery address / notes” field. We removed the last name, company, country, region, city, postcode, two address lines and the ship-to-a-different-address block. The form is laid out in two columns.
Pages built from blocks, content and search
For the WordPress editor we made 10 custom ACF blocks: the first-screen slider, categories, the catalogue with the cart, text and image, reviews, contact cards, a contact form, a map, breadcrumbs and a spacer. The owner assembles and changes pages himself, and every block has a preview.
A recipes section, articles about crayfish, delivery and reviews pages. Titles and descriptions target the queries “live and boiled crayfish Kharkiv”. The technical cart addresses are closed to indexing, page addresses are in Latin letters, and the breadcrumbs carry BreadcrumbList markup.
